Distributed computing transforms adding machines into a complex engineering problem involving networks, concurrency, and partial failures. While increasing processing power or storage seems straightforward, coordinating independent systems creates significant challenges. Similarly, peer-to-peer systems evolved from simple file sharing to complex architectures. They moved from Napster's centralized directories and Gnutella's query flooding toward structured overlays, DHTs, and Chord's logarithmic routing, allowing participants to act as both clients and servers to decentralize resource location and distribution.
