Off-grid data centers aren't the panacea that some AI firms hoped

AI firms are building off-grid data centers using onsite generation like gas turbines and fuel cells to bypass electric grid delays. Currently, 59 projects with 90 gigawatts capacity plan this behind-the-meter approach. However, local backlash and reliability concerns are challenging this vision. If these giant projects stumble, trillions of dollars in AI investment and the industry's rapid expansion plans could be at risk, as off-grid solutions are not the panacea originally hoped for by companies.
