Inside Petal: Building the World’s First Petabit-Class Transoceanic Subsea Cable

Meta has announced Petal, the world's first petabit-class transoceanic subsea cable. Connecting France and the United States over approximately 7,000 km, the system is expected to enter service in 2029. Petal represents a significant innovation in subsea infrastructure, becoming the first cable system to deploy multi-core fiber technology at scale. This advancement allows the cable to deliver petabit capacity at transoceanic distances, effectively doubling the capabilities of previous subsea cable technologies developed by Meta.
