Australia: 25 Years of Abusive Offshore Detention

Human Rights Watch reports that the Australian government has caused grave abuses for thousands of asylum seekers through its offshore detention system since September 2001. Over 25 years, more than 5,000 individuals were forcibly transferred to Nauru and Manus Island in PNG. These detainees faced inhumane conditions, resulting in serious physical and mental health harm. The United Nations refugee agency and various human rights groups have repeatedly highlighted these systemic failures and the resulting suffering of the transferred people.
